Field Mapping or Rapping? - Blog 2

To field map the genre of my niche, I need to analyse and look through the background of Kanye West himself. Growing up in Chicago, Kanye was exposed to the potentially violent streets of America at a young age. Although he had a stable life with his mother being a college professor and his Father a photographer, West explored his interest in music throughout school and later dropped out of college to pursue a career in music.

The format I will use for my webpage will most likely be informative yet humorous, as Kanye explores himself in his legacy being; a rapper, producer and innovator. This format will be the most efficient way of exploring his mind and media presence. Kanye has such an influential impact on any media platform he touches, with 16.5 million Instagram followers. (Where Kanye has a total of a whopping 0 posts) and nearly doubling that with his most infamous platform in my eyes, Twitter having 30.4m followers, and I dare say most of them are active. So I'm guessing his presence is highly represented throughout social media platforms, and with proper ethnography research, adequate to evaluate.

My website will use various ethnography research methods through fan pages, information pages and his messenger. To create an easy process for his fans to find the precise details an audience needs about Kanye West. Using hashtags and hyperlinks on different media platforms aims to get the audience's attention and create that online persona I intend to enforce.

What perspective do I bring to this study?

The perspective I am bringing towards this study is an outsider; I'm a white male from Australia, a very different dynamic to Kanye himself. Although looking through my other web pages and blog posts throughout BCM, most are directly aimed at music-related journalism. I discuss a lot about the intergenerational challenges that I haven't personally faced. Yet, people are still facing how we all stay connected through the power and art of music. Therefore I want people to express their interest in tune with me in a social media environment, hoping to get comments and messages from my audience to talk about what extra content I need next to keep my online persona alive.

Scholarly articles on this niche.

The first article examines the cultural impact Kanye west has had on our generation, exploring in detail the enigma that Kanye west has formed of himself on social media and through music.

Furthermore, the article will come of great value when forming my webpage.

This second article examines Kanye wests first album, The College Dropout and his follow-up Late Registration in 2005 and Graduation in 2007. He continues with them by criticising the institutional education front, further exploring how Bourdieu's concept of symbolic violence expresses the ability to dilute meanings while hiding the more profound beliefs and relations.
